So my birthday lasted longer than July 7th — my birthday celebration actually went from 07/03 – 07/08. At first it really seemed a bit ridiculous, but I’ve got to say it was one of the most special times of my life and I have such an amazing, loving, spouse who pulled all the stops. It began when Husband booked a room at a beautiful Bed & Breakfast in Fredricksburg, Texas — not too far from my hometown, but a good 4.5 hour drive from our current home located in what I lovingly call the “Metro-mess”.
I was so excited to get away from the noise and congestion of the city that I didn’t really care which B&B we stayed at — the only condition was that it was close enough to town we could watch the parade on the 4th. Well, let me just tell you, Husband did an incredible job of picking the perfect location. We stayed in the most gorgeous room on Main Street, located in a historical building that’s been renovated. The room is private and not a typical B&B scenario, so we ate our meals wherever we wanted and came and went as we pleased. Not only did I get to watch the 4th of July parade, but we watched it from our very own private balcony — best seats in town! We were even able to see the fireworks from our back windows, which was such a nice treat. After we left the chandelier filled room and the MOST comfortable bed in the world, we set back on the road to reality:*(.
Once on the road, we took our time and stopped for homemade peach ice cream (what my mom always made during the summers when I was little) — no 4th of July is complete without homemade peach ice cream, so I was happy to see so much of it being sold by the locals.
After finishing our sweet goodness, we drove as slowly as possible, stopping to see LBJ State Park, touring a winery and finding all other ways to make the holiday weekend last as long as possible. Eventually, though, we made our way back to DFW with cell phones, radios, computers and every other form of technological distraction at hand *yuck*. The birthday experience did not end in Fredricksburg — Husband was on a mission to make certain the actual day (July 7) was filled with fun…and it was. His love for me is so incredible and his desire to show me by the things he does is beyond words. I’m truly a lucky girl.
When my actual birthday finally rolled around, Husband and I decided we’d pay for the overpriced logo at *tarbucks to kick the day off. Then he went to work (but worked from home so we could still spend the day together), and MM came over. Oh MM — we have one of those unique mother/daughter relationships where you know each other a little too well and it can be a great thing for your relationship or have you drawing swords. Fortunately, we’ve been on the first scenario as of late and I’m so grateful to have her in my life. MM really wanted to take us out for a lovely dinner at Restaurant Ava which is owned by Husband’s close friend and chef, Randall. So, we set off for Rockwall and had a five course tasting — always a surprise as they work with farm fresh foods and the menu is ever changing. Randall (Chef/Friend/etc.), went out of his way and changed one of the courses when he found out we were coming. Goat Cheese Ravioli is my absolute favorite dish he’s ever created, so he made the pasta from scratch and it was great. After dinner we drove back to the other side of the lake and called it a night.
I told Husband he didn’t need to get me anything else since the B&B was so extravagant, but he did…and it was the greatest gift I could have asked for. Husband knows I’m not big on “stuff” and appreciate things that have thought and meaning behind them. Memories are the greatest gift of all, and experiences help create them. So, Husband gave me a really sweet card and fun/colorful journal — he says all my others are too “fancy” because they are leather bound — I happen to love them, but he said this one looked like me because it was vibrant. Inside the journal, though, was the real gift…he donated a Spanish Bible in my name to an orphanage. I was and am so ecstatic to have a husband who knows me so well and care enough to honor me in that way. I could not ask for more. And as if all this were not enough, we are going to The Greatest Show on Earth!!! It might seem silly to you, but I’m stoked because I don’t exactly remember it from when I was a kid, though supposedly I saw the elephants and and cannons when I was a toddler. How great is it to be almost 30 and have a spouse who is all about having fun with you? That’s the way it should be when you love someone and are friends. I love my best friend more than anything and had to let everyone know how he celebrated my birthday. The problem is…how will I top all of this when he turns 30 next month???
